It's tough to commit to much less get started on an exercise regime when you're a stay-at-home mom or dad but it can be done. Lucky for you, with a little creativity and ingenuity you'll find that the day of a busy parent has many opportunities for incorporating a workout. It's all about knowing where to find them. Below are just a handful of opportunities for exercise exercise time that you might otherwise be missing.
Make your kids part of your workout The number of obese children is at epidemic levels, so, it's incumbent upon all parents to ensure their entire family is keeping to a consistent exercise regime. Here's a fun option: The next time you tell your kids to go outside to play go and play with them. Don't let what you need to do be an excuse to not get your heart rate up and spend more quality time with your children.
Another great motivator is putting your workout clothes on just as soon as you get out of bed and not letting yourself get out of them until you've done your workout for the day. This way, you're always ready to work out at the instant you find an opportunity - for example, while the children are watching 'Blue's Clues' or napping. Wearing your workout gear, you're also sending yourself a constant reminder that your exercise regime is a priority.
To be sure, some days are just too busy to sneak in a shower much less a full exercise regime. Even on days where a full workout isn't an option, you can still sneak in brief stints of activity here and there. Here's an idea: you can park farther away from the stores you visit to sneak in some extra walking time. Adding on to that idea, pick up the pace when you walk wherever you're walking. Stay-at-home moms and dads can make their workouts a game with small children by using little ones as free weights for pushups and leg-lifts. The kids will have a ball. Why not climb a few flights of stairs at those down moments when you're waiting for the soup to get ready or the dryer to stop. Not matter how you slice it making your workouts a priority will help you feel better it also helps you set an example for your children in the long term.
